Resources
This in no way exhausts the resource list but here are a few I've found helpful and resourceful.
http://www.earth911.org/ . Just enter your Zip code at this website to find out where your local recycling stations are and what they do and don't recycle.
http://www.greendimes.com/, http://www.41pounds.org/, http://www.catalogchoice.org/. Visit these sites to reduce waste in your mailbox by getting off junk-mail lists.
http://www.computertakeback.com/, http://www.collectivegood.com/. These helpful sites show how to recycle cell phones and computers.
http://www.rbrc.org/, http://www.biggreenbox.com/, http://www.batteryrecycling.com/, http://www.recycleplace.com/. Go to these sites to learn how to recycle batteries.
http://www.reusablebags.com/, http://www.sunterra.us/. Great sites for purchasing all kinds of reusable bags.
How many phone books do you need? Stop getting those bulky throwbacks by contacting the manufacturer (their contact information is usually listed on the phone book’s inside cover) and asking to be taken off their mailing list.

What is Freecycle?
From their website -
"The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,284 groups with 4,647,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free."
We recommend that you join as a "DIGEST" subscription so you don't get too many emails.
To join in Nassau County, NY:

The Story of Stuff
Hi. My name is Mary-Beth and I'm one of the founding members of Green Elements, Sea Cliff. I thought I'd share this quick clip with you on conscious consuming. Maybe you hadn't thought about 'stuff' before in this way. And perhaps seeing 'stuff' this way might help inform your purchasing decisions. All 'stuff' has a life cycle. All of the stuff that we buy, consume, use, recycle, pass along, send to the landfill, sell (get the picture) takes stuff to make (natural resources), has a lifeline, ages and eventually, sometimes hundreds of years later, decomposes. Check it out post your thoughts. And have a green day.

Recycle your sneakers
Recycle your old athletic shoes. Reuse-A-Shoe, part of Nike's Let MePlay campaign, is one of Nike's longest-running environmental and community programs, where worn-out athletic shoes of any brand are collected, processed and recycled into material used in sports surfaces like basketball courts, tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks and playgrounds for young people around the world. Find where to donate your old athletic shoes.
You can also send your old shoes to:
Nike Recycling Center
c/o Reuse-A-Shoe
26755 SW 95th Ave.
Wilsonville, OR 97070
